Why Japanese people wear the same clothes?

Waves album

I’m a Japanese artist and I collaborate with friends of talented artists from overseas. I am making stories for songs, so I would like to introduce the concept and story of the song I made with them. The album is based on the theme of “waves”. The keywords of the three waves that were featured this time are “waves of the era”, “radio waves”, and “clothing trends”. Based on these keywords, I combined what is actually happening in Japan with what I felt while using my imagination and created a story.

The title of the song is “Takenoko” (baby bamboo in Japanese)and the keyword of this song is “clothing trend”. I expressed the Japanese who live without giving in to the pressure to conform to Japan with a story likened to the growth of “Takenoko” (bamboo shoots). The youtube link for this song is posted at the bottom, so please listen to it.

<Concept>

As anyone who has lived in Japan can attest, all things in the urban environment are influenced by trends. These trends have a finite shelf life and are constantly changing.  Most Japanese people don’t think to question this situation and just follow the group. I imagine them as takenoko(baby bamboo) or baby bamboo, that rarely grows up. Every once in a while, there is a takenoko(baby bamboo)that questions their circumstances, and environment. This takenoko(baby bamboo)develops, growing higher and higher, to see a new view and blossoms a flower. The bamboo flower only blooms once every 100-120years, and when it blooms, the bamboo withers. I wrote this song, thinking that there is a wonderful view that only a person with their own convictions can see.

<Story>

People who dress like everyone are likened to a lot of takenoko (baby bamboo) that came out together after the rain. A large number of bamboo shoots criticize the different bamboo shoot with their cold eyes. While many bamboo shoots repeat the same thing near the ground, unusual bamboo shoots act and grow with their own belief. Only bamboo shoots that have grown and turned into bamboo can bloom and see the beautiful scenery.

<Direct translation of Lyrics>

Become popular ,trend of this year

“take in advance*1” “low price*2” “how to dress up*3” coordinate

Bamboo shoots after the rain,*4 matching the surroundings

What is that?

Different from everyone

Strange Bamboo shoot

Strange looking

Bamboo shoots out of “the world in general”

Survive with “herself”

When the flower*5 blooms

She can see the beautiful view

Everyone together in such a “world”

Are you happy?

Having her own conviction

Shouldn’t it be selfish

<note>

“take in advance*1” “low price*2” “how to dress up*3”: Words written in fashion magazines and nets for Japanese young women. The reader imitates the example on the instruction (a dress that is considered correct in Japan.)

Takenoko shoots after the rain*4 After raining, it turns from the bamboo shoots coming out one after another, turn, things appear one after another.

The flower*5 The bamboo’s flower. The bamboo flower only blooms once every 100-120years, and when it blooms, the bamboo withers. I wrote this sentence, thinking that there is a precious scenery that only a living person can see with my own convictions.
