Japanese culture that excludes outsiders

Another Japanese topic

This time I wrote a story about what happened in the era of “Reiwa”, the next era of “Heisei” in Japan. The Japanese treat people who have or are suspected of being infected with corona sternly. I think it has something to do with Japanese culture that I wrote about.

<Concept>

Japan is a village society. It is a country that is tough on the “weak”. With the spread of corona infection, a large group of certain Japanese people have eliminated a small number of “outsiders”. I depicted the situation as a story that “human beings turn into beasts”.

“Hikikomori” were scorned and oppressed by the society as “they do not live a human life”, but when the whole country is locked down, the action appears correct.

Am I the only one who feels strange in such an inconsistent society?

The “strong” and “weak” are two sides of the same coin. Even those who are in a position now do not know when they will turn into the weak. A strong person gives the weak one help, not discrimination. I think the beauty of Humanity is that we can consider another’s pain and give kindness to another.

What do you think?

<Story>

There is an ostracized group called “Mura-hachibu” in Japan. ”Mura-hachibu” are people and families who threaten the order of a village.

I work in a rural village in Japan. I was born in another village, however I like this place. With the spread of a coronavirus, prejudice and attacks on those who do not belong to the village group -people from outside the community, such as medical staff, who have been virally infected – have increased. A friend I’m close with suddenly changes her attitude because I’m from outside the village and fears, looks down, and attacks me as if I’m a virus. Like a beast no longer of any use to the community.

Humans who have lost compassion and empathy for the pain of others have turned into beasts in human form.

I ask, “Did I do something wrong?”

I sigh and open the S N S app. There was a new post. “Hikikomori” all over the country is posting joy to S N S. In Japan, “Hikikomori”, is a state where one stays at home without going to the real world, which appeared very negative to them until now. Although staying at home had been recommended all over the world, and it has subsequently been deemed bad to go out. So, the light began to strike on them.

This is what I think.

The “correct behavior” in Japanese society is always decided by the powerful and unified majority (i.e. “strong”), and can influence all other perceptions when it’s view is updated -like the kaleidoscope pattern. Most people are controlled by the person in authority and media.

Tyranny, like liquid, flows to the weak. Is it possible to say that the life in which the strong people sacrifice the weak is “Human-like(qualities)” depending on strong people and systems

<Lyrics>

“Corona Hachibu*1“: Best friend is today’s enemy

For those who have been removed from the group, glare them,

peel their fangs, and kill them all

Oh, good news

The whole country became “Hikikomori*2

The changing correct answer

What is “Human like(qualities)”?

<Note>

“Corona Hachibu*1“: Corona virus + Mura-Hachibu

Mura-hachibu is to make people and families who threaten the order of the village out of the hands of all the villagers.

“Hikikomori*2“: A state where he / she stays at home for more than 6 months without going to work or school, and having little interaction with people other than family members.
